This weekend there is aSteam Punk Extravaganza in Haworth, West Yorkshire. Steam Punk was new to me, it's a sub genre of science fiction that features steam powered machinery - think Wild Wild West - men in top hats and women with small waists! Oh and its post-apocalyptic with a mixture of various genres styles - Jack the Ripper meets Mad Max. I like the mixture of styles; I like to try that in my writing. I like to reinforce and then subvert cliches; just like the idea of a vampire who can bring out someone's humanity.
I was amazed at the fantastic clothes that both the visitors and stall holders wore and felt seriously under dressed. My fleece and cotton trousers couldn't compete with the bustles, top hats and goggles that adorned the majority of ladies and how wonderful that the people dressing to impress were not in their teens.
I like the idea that they've waited until their children have fled the nest before dusting down their waistcoats and bustiers and donning their Steam Punk paraphernalia.
My purchases from the great stalls there were some Gothic Christmas Wrapping paper and a range of miniature grave stones and coffins (to be posted on). Oh and some chocolate from the sweet shop.....
If you get a chance to check out Steam Punk then I highly recommend it!
